The Call To Nature, The Good Path & The Camino

I’m here to share my inspiration and The Love of walking. If you are drawn to walk the Way of Staint James on the Camino Santiago, I’m here to guide you and help make that a reality.

Identifying what it takes, the perfect balance of feeling prepared while letting go, to maximize enjoyment. The preparation needed to undertake walking day after day. From the physical training to the gear choice that will serve your adventures. Embodying mindfulness. Allowing for freedom and security to both exist as you set your sights on an epic adventure.

The training involved to fulfill the call of the Camino is in your backyard. I started with 3 miles a day, and evolved to hiking the three highest peaks in the Tahoe basin as preparation for the endurance needed for the Camino Francès.

Training Days and Self-Care

Start with 3 miles/ 5 days a week.

As a bodyworker, I've noticed that daily walking of at least 3 miles is a transformative distance. Movement sustained for 3 miles helps improve mobility and eases discomfort by releasing energy through movement. It’s a practice. Eating well and managing your diet can also make it easier to move comfortably.

Pace & Path: Always remember to take your time, one step at a time! Increase your mileage gradually and occasionally take bigger leaps.

This can be the fun part as you plan for bigger adventures!

Conditioning:

Regular walking builds strength, leading to walking at a quicker pace, which will help prepare you for challenging climbs. If you haven’t started training, no worries! Start with a mile and increase it by one mile each week. Simple bodyweight exercises can also improve this stamina.

The goal is to increase from daily 3-5 mile walks, onto 7, 11, and 15 mile hikes. Eventually you find yourself able to walk 5 + hours. Any training that involves climbing will help you meet the demands of the Camino.

So, plan some destination hikes & go adventuring! Most of the Camino Frances isn't steep, but training at higher elevations will boost your strength. Once you’re comfortable walking for 5 hours, you'll know what it feels like to add another 2 hours. This mental preparation is half the challenge!

Self-Massage & Stretching:

It’s tough to predict which parts of your body will hurt during the Camino. Knowing stretches and self-care techniques to help ease aches from walking is helpful. Having the right first aid kit is essential.

Remember, stretching keeps your body happy and helps prevent injuries. A good stretching routine will support your success on the Camino.

Learning tips for common issues can make your adventure more successful!

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses, seek reflection, and lean into the spiritual side of the Camino. Why only rock 2D?

Don’t forget to ask questions!

This is my Soundtrack -The Gambler (for fun of course!

Written by David Schlitz in 1976 and made famous by Kenny Rogers in 1978.

It’s the meaning behind the famous song of 1976, (my birth year)
That struck a chord. It has nothing to do with poker. It is a counsel on life.

Life is not straightforward. Between the extremes, your determined action must be in relationship to the circumstances. These decisions become a matter of probability- a gamble.

In the journey of life, we are travelers with no proof that we are going anywhere. A nowhere destination may be the point.

Don't distract yourself with superficiality. Ask the profound and replace forgetful living with an authentic life. Trust your intuition.

You will play the game of life, the hand you've been given, over and over until you learn to play it right.

Know when to hold em, know when to fold em.

Don’t fight every battle. Know when to run.

Learn how to handle defeat or failure. That's what matters, as life is never all about success. Success typically grows out of failure, if it happens at all. Failure determines who we will become. Don't measure your riches, count your awards, and seek more. Don’t be greedy. When you win, be grateful, but don’t pay too much attention to the details.

There’ll be time enough for counting when the dealin's done. Peace!
